In the UAE, a Tax Residency Certificate (TRC) is an official document issued by the Ministry of Finance. The UAE has signed Double Taxation Avoidance Agreements (DTAA) with more than 100 countries, including the United Kingdom, to prevent individuals and businesses from being taxed twice on the same income. A TRC confirms that an individual or company is recognised as a tax resident of the UAE for treaty purposes.
For UK individuals relocating to the UAE, or UK companies establishing operations there, obtaining a TRC can provide significant tax advantages under the UK–UAE Double Taxation Agreement. This may help reduce or eliminate certain tax liabilities in the UK, depending on personal circumstances and UK tax residency status.
Individuals who reside in the UAE for more than 183 days within a 12-month period and hold a valid UAE residency visa may be eligible to apply for a Tax Residency Certificate. UK nationals setting up businesses in the UAE can also benefit from the UAE’s extensive treaty network, provided their company is properly registered and operating within the country.
It is important to note that offshore companies are generally not eligible to obtain a UAE Tax Residency Certificate under applicable tax treaties. Instead, such entities may apply for alternative documentation, as only qualifying mainland or free zone companies can benefit from treaty protections.
